Photographs taken of Cockatoo Island in Sydney Harbour
on my recent trip to Australia
Cockatoo Island’s history dates back to the time of the first settlement of Australia and beyond – it was probably once a base for the Aboriginal peoples of the area to fish from. In the 1800s it was a prison – convicts quarried stone and built many of the buildings on the island. During its more recent history, it has housed an orphanage, a reformatory, and an industrial school for girls. However, its major use was as the Commonwealth Naval Dockyard, where Australia’s naval warships and submarines were built and repaired. The dockyard was closed in 1992 when many buildings were demolished and most of the machinery was sold off. The island lay dormant until taken over by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust, who, after extensive restoration, opened the island to the public in 2007.
